About JFT-Basic

Japan Foundation Test for Basic Japanese

JFT-Basic is a computer-based test run by the Japan Foundation that measures everyday communicative Japanese at roughly the A2 level. It is one of the two accepted language proofs for the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa and is offered year-round at test centres in Nepal, with results available much faster than JLPT.

What you need to know

01

What is JFT-Basic?

JFT-Basic tests whether you can handle everyday situations in Japan: shopping, transport, workplace instructions, and simple conversations. It is designed for people who want to live and work in Japan, particularly under the SSW programme.

The test has four sections: Script & Vocabulary, Conversation & Expression, Listening Comprehension, and Reading Comprehension, all completed on a computer in about 60 minutes.

02

JFT-Basic vs JLPT N4

Both are accepted for the SSW visa's language requirement, so you only need to pass one of them.

JFT-Basic is held frequently throughout the year at computer test centres, and results arrive within about 5 business days. JLPT is paper-based and only held twice a year.

JFT-Basic focuses on practical, everyday communication, while JLPT leans more on grammar and reading. Many students find JFT-Basic the faster route to SSW eligibility.
