About JLPT

Japanese Language Proficiency Test

JLPT is the standard Japanese language proficiency test, required for university admission and work visas in Japan. It has five levels (N1 to N5) and is conducted twice a year in July and December.

What is JLPT?

JLPT is jointly administered by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES). It measures Japanese language proficiency for non-native speakers.

The test covers three sections: Language Knowledge (vocabulary & grammar), Reading, and Listening.

Test Levels

N1 (highest level): advanced Japanese suitable for academic and professional settings.

N2 (upper intermediate): sufficient for university entrance and most work environments.

N3 (intermediate): basic academic and social communication.

N4 to N5 (beginner levels): foundational Japanese skills.

Most Japanese universities and language schools require N2 or N1 for admission.
